Michigan State LB Wayne Matthews III says he's doing 'a lot better' after he was carted off field vs. USC

Michigan State linebacker Wayne Matthews III said he’d be “back in no time” after he was carted off the field during the Spartans’ loss to No. 25 USC late Saturday night.

The game was halted for approximately 10 minutes late in the first half after Matthews was injured while making a tackle on a run play. Matthews was placed on a backboard before he was taken off the field.

The linebacker gave a thumbs-up to the crowd as he was being driven off the field and was transported to Los Angeles General Medical Center. The school said after his injury that Matthews had all his motor skills intact. Sunday afternoon, Matthews thanked everyone for their support via social media and said that he was doing "a lot better now."

Matthews had 33 tackles across eight games in 2024 and is currently Michigan State’s second-leading tackler with 24 stops over four games. He transferred to MSU from Old Dominion, where he racked up 135 total tackles and 10 tackles for loss as a redshirt sophomore in 2023.

Michigan State fell to 3-1 after losing 45-31 to the Trojans. Michigan State cut USC’s lead to 31-24 late in the third quarter after a Trojans fumble, but USC responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive to extend the lead to 14 points.
